Reveille with Veterans
2022vetpicf

Major General (ret) Brian C. Newby
BRIAN C. NEWBY

Major General (ret) Brian C. Newby is the Managing Partner of Cantey Hanger, LLP, a 140-year-old, full-service civil law firm headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas.  Cantey Hanger maintains offices in Fort Worth, Dallas, Austin and Ellis County.

General Newby graduated from Western Hills High School in 1979.  He is a 1983 graduate of Texas Tech University, with a Bachelor of Arts in History and from the University of Texas School Of Law, with a Juris Doctorate in 1986.

A distinguished graduate of Air Force ROTC, he had a 31-year military career serving as an Active Duty, Reserve and Air National Guard judge advocate (JAG).   He is a former Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of the Texas Air National Guard, where he had responsibility for the headquarters and three flying wings in Texas.  His last assignment was as the Air National Guard Assistant to The Judge Advocate General of the Air Force, The Pentagon, Washington, D.C.

General Newby has also served the State of Texas as the general counsel and chief of staff to the Governor of Texas and on the Board of Regents of the Texas Tech University System.

He was named a Distinguished Graduate of Western Hills High School in 2003.

While at Western Hills, he was a 4-year letterman in track and field, Cougar Band drum major for three years and was Student Body President his senior year.

On Friday, November 11, 2022, Western Hills High School hosted the 1st Annual Veterans Day Breakfast for our local veterans as well as the veteran parents of our students.

It commenced with Reveille, played by our band director, Ms. Hinds as AFJROTC hoisted the Colors of our Nation and State.  The football team, band members, choir and cheer leaders all played a major part in the recognition ceremony while AFJROTC helped welcome and serve our community veterans.

Major General (Retired) Brian C. Newby gave the welcome speech and told a stirring story about the first (false and) real Armistice Day in San Antonio, Texas on those two mornings in 1918.    It involved a running airplane engine on a parade float, a lot of horses and cowboys.  It was a great history lesson.  Below you will find Maj. Gen Newby’s bio, which includes highlights from his days at WHHS as a student (Class of 1979).

Mrs. Katy Fatheree in our History department was the overall architect and did an awesome job getting us all to take part in welcoming veterans this morning.  Coach Ribinskas and Col. Malesky helped secure several donations from local businesses, while several other faculty members (Coach Holcomb, Mrs. Harkness, Mrs. Edge, Mr. Trotter, Mrs. Bounds) helped with decorating, welcoming, and serving our veterans. The donations included various breakfast items (pancakes, sausages, breakfast burritos, pastries, donuts, bagels, coffee, juice, etc.) and lots of decorations.

Donations were provided by:
Chick-Fil-A (Benbrook)
Einstein Bros on Bryant Irvin Road (Fort Worth)
