Julia Worthington Black Box Theatre

A little history...

In June of 2021, the Board of Education approved the renaming of the Black Box theater in her honor.

Mrs. Julia Worthington
Worthington

Mrs. Julia Worthington, a graduate of Trinity University where she earned a B.A. in theatre, was the theatre arts lead teacher and director at Western Hills High School until her retirement in January of 2021.  For over 40 years, Mrs. Worthington built the WHHS theatre department from one class to as many as ten classes with an assistant theatre teacher.  Western Hills created 6-9 student productions during each school year.

Providing “light bulb” moments with her students kept a smile on her face and her energy high for many years.  She sponsored the Western Hills International Thespian Society, an honorary society for secondary dramatics students.  Mrs. Worthington has performed musicals with Teachers on the Boards, a student scholarship based teacher organization in the 80’s, and directed the H2O summer musical theatre workshop for 13 years.  In 2008, she worked with the Disney Corporation to produce one of the first high school productions of Disney’s High School Musical Onstage!  1 and 2.  Subsequently, she was awarded the Betty Buckley Award for contributions to Fort Worth Community Theatre in 2009.  Mrs. Worthington was named High School Teacher of the Year in 2015 by the Live Theatre League of North Texas.

Besides creating, teaching, and directing, Julia Worthington loves her husband of over 33 years, a well written book, a moving performance, “bad” sci- fi movies, road trips through the Southwest, gardening, and cooking with those she loves.
