Cougar Choir News
On March 27th, The Cougar Choirs had a record-breaking day. All four choirs that attended Region 5 UIL Concert and Sight Reading achieved the coveted "Sweepstakes" Award. In addition, the Western Hills Choir program was the only program in FWISD to receive a score of one from every single judge for every single choir that performed. This is the first time this has happened in over 20 years!
Congratulations to the Western Hills High School Choir for having 3 All-Staters this year! This is the most All-Staters in a single year in our entire school history! This is the highest honor that a high school music student in Texas can receive.
They will be representing our school in the All-State Choirs at TMEA in San Antonio in February.
Way to go:
Izzy Carroll (12th) 2nd Chair Soprano
Luis Hernandez (11th) 3rd Chair Tenor
Sebastian Alonso (11th) 6th Chair Bass
On Tuesday night, your Cougar Choir took on a big crowd at Birchman Baptist Church and came away with a solid win against the seasonal Scrooges and Grinches. They started off with a jaw-dropping rendition of “Noel” with Izzy Carroll providing the descant. They followed with an old school (1741 to be exact) ditty called “Gloria.”
Leading them into the half was “Carol of the Bells,” a team favorite, scoring them 50 points in Holiday Cheer because everyone knows this play from Home Alone. The Cougars took a break while the Leonard Middle School and WHHS Pyramid Elementary Schools performed for halftime.
The Cougars took back the stage to perform “To the Lamb on the Throne.” To everyone’s amazement, band director Meggan Hinds and the Go Center’s very own Sean Perez joined with a brassy supporting play. The crowd was getting antsy, so our team decided to pump them up with a sing-a-long of “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.”
Their final performance was joined by all the pyramid choirs and notable alumni; Weldon Cannon and Mariam Fatuma. The Cougars had a secret play in their pockets that they pulled out on this song – a full band including long-time favorite, Caroline Maas on the keys! Their head coach, Blake Glass, could hardly tame his conducting arms as the students belted “Let Everything that Hath Breath” alongside the other teams (I mean schools). TJ Hamilton’s spirited solo really anchored the group, ensuring a big score (get it…score?) for the Cougars. The pews were literally rocking as the night came to an end.
The MVP goes to Parissa Khaleqi for her angelic team support, singing every song to the fullest despite playing for the Cougars less than a year.
What a night! The Cougars came through and it is reported that they are going to Disney World, now.
