I am excited to announce that Jesus Mendoza, Kevin Jimenez, and Rafael Granados were all just announced as Academic All-State selections.

They became the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd WHHS boys to be selected since 2019.

That’s a big deal.

The Western Hills Varsity Boys Soccer team's season came to an end last night with a 3-0 loss to Bridgeport in the bi-district playoffs at Northwest ISD Stadium.

After a quiet first few minutes, the Bulls scored on a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead.

Your Cougars, however, did not back down, showing West Side pride in front of dozens of Western Hills fans - including a Spirit Bus that brought 33 students. Cruz Hernandez did a stellar job at the back line, clearing numerous Bridgeport attempts at launching an attack, and Andrew Peña-Espinoza and Alexis Bautista played strong in the midfield, helping the Cougars get the ball up field.

Angel Salazar came off the bench and provided a spark both attacking and defending, while Landon Whittaker made two outstanding saves, denying the Bridgeport striker twice in one-on-one, point-blank situations, to keep the score at 1-0 going into halftime.

In the second half, with injuries beginning to take their toll on the Cougars, Cesar Hinojos came off the bench and played arguably his best game of the season, going toe-to-toe with the Bulls midfield.

Bridgeport added two goals later in the second half for the final margin.

The Cougars end the season with a record of 8 victories, 12 losses and 1 draw.

The Western Hills Boys Soccer teams finished off their regular season last night with a pair of resounding victories over the Young Men’s Leadership Academy.

The JV Boys got things started quickly, as Luis Saucedo scored a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes, first heading in a corner kick from Joey Rangel, then following his own shot and putting in the rebound after a pass from Marcos Escobar.

In the second half, Jaden Stevenson and Aidan Davis each scored the first goal of their respective soccer careers, and Jurem Enríquez added a goal late to finish off the 5-0 victory.

The Varsity Boys started in similarly quick fashion, as a pair of goals gave them a 2-0 lead inside the first 15 minutes. Tony Medina scored with a neat finish on a pass from Guadalupe Roman Figueroa, and Alexis Bautista headed in a perfect free-kick delivery from Alberto Delgadillo.

The Cougars never looked back, taking a 4-0 lead into halftime on their way to a 12-0 victory to clinch a berth in the playoffs.

The JV Boys finished the season with a record of 10 wins, 6 losses and 3 draws, and 6-1-3 in district play.

Varsity improved to 8-11-1, and finished 7-5 in district play.

This will be the Cougar Boys’ 14th trip to the playoffs in the last 15 seasons (we couldn’t overcome COVID in 2020).

The Cougars will play Bridgeport in the bi-district round at Northwest ISD Stadium (2001 Texan Drive in Justin) at 7:15pm on Monday. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.

The Western Hills Boys Soccer teams will close out their regular seasons tomorrow night after a disappointing Senior Night against their opponents from Diamond Hill-Jarvis just before Spring Break.

The JV Boys suffered their first District loss of the season, as some mental mistakes resulted in a 3-0 defeat to the Eagles.

The Varsity Boys, after falling behind early, fought back to tie their match on a spectacular goal by Guadalupe Roman Figueroa. Most of the match was evenly played. But with 4 minutes left, the Eagles scored for a 2-1 victory.

The JV Boys dropped to 9-6-3 on the season, and 5-1-3 in district play.

Varsity dropped to 7-11-1, and 6-5 in district play.

Both teams will be at Scarborough-Handley Field tomorrow night to face the Young Men’s Leadership Academy. The Varsity Boys are looking to secure a playoff spot. JV kicks off at 6:30pm, Varsity follows at 8pm.
