News (2023-present)

Thursday night was a very long but exciting night.  This year was the first year of an unequipped weight class in powerlifting.  This means they do not get to use squat suits or bench shirts, which can add 200-300 pounds to their overall total.  At the same time, you are competing against 1a, 2a, 3a, 4a, 5a and 6a competitors, who are not at the same meet as you are.  We finally got the results last night at 9 pm and found that Abby is the number one lifter in her weight class and WILL be competing in the State Championship in Frisco next Thursday.

Abby had a great meet at the Regional Meet where she squatted 320, benched 135 and had a deadlift of 345 for an 800 total.  Every lift Abby did was a regional record and a new personal record for all lifts with lots of room to go.  We are looking forward to competing at the Comerica Center next week.

Saturday morning we left school at 5:30am to head to Decatur to represent Fort Worth at the boys 4A regional meet.  Kevin Cruz represented in the 275 weight Class, Josh Raga in the 220 and Justin Hurst in the 123.  All the boys made weight by 7:30 and waited for the meet to begin.

Kevin Cruz started us out with a 585 Squat, then kept going with a 360 bench and a 495 deadlift.  Kevin finished third overall, missing a state trip by 30 pounds.

Josh Raga finished 7th with a 485 squat, a 285 bench, and a 450 deadlift with a season high 1220 deadlift.

Justin finished 9th in a VERY competitive 123 weight class where he squatted 260, benched 140 and had a deadlift of 260.

The boys had a great season, and I am very proud of them.  I had no seniors on the team this year and 18 students competed. If any students want to lift, the weight room is open after school every day.

The following students have qualified for regionals and will lift in Decatur this week.

GIRLS-THURSDAY

Abby Moilan (should make state on her first lift)

BOYS-SATURDAY

Kevin Cruz
Josh Raga
Justin Hurst

Powerlifting is a volunteer coaching position in Fort Worth ISD.  Coach Rock does not get paid at all for the time and effort he puts into our kids here at WHHS.  For more than 10 years, Coach Rock has had numerous accolades in powerlifting.  He does this all because of his commitment to WHHS and our kids! We have the most consistent and best Powerlifting team in FWISD because of this commitment from coach Rock!

SO, A BIG, HUGE, THUNDERING THANK YOU to Coach Rock!

AS ALWAYS........GO COUGARS!!!!

First off, thank you to all the coaches that helped. We ran a fast meet that was very competitive.  This was the final meet of the year before regionals and we dominated in typical Cougar fashion.  The boys' powerlifting team took first place, sending three to regionals and one girl to regionals next week.

For the meet in the 123 weight class, Justin Hurst finished first place and Alexis Yakobo took second right behind him.
In the 148 Weight class, Orylyn Crocket took 1st place.
In the 181 Weight class, Brycen Foster took 3rd place, Jacob Bryant took 4th place and Patrick Broughton took 5th.
In the 220 weight class, Josh Raga placed 1st and Josiah Pena placed 4th.
In the 242 weight class, Maurcio Martinez placed 1st and Ricardo Almarez placed 2nd.

Finally, in the 275 weight class, Kevin Cruz placed 1st and Anthony Rodriguez placed 3rd.

Lifters of note, Justin Hurst had a new personal record of 730 pounds which puts him solidly in regionals, Josh Raga had a new personal best of 525 in Squat, Brycen Foster showed out in the 181 weight class with a big 400 pound deadlift and Kevin Cruz showed his strength with a 585 pound squat and a 485 deadlift.

Boys Regionals is next Saturday in Decatur. As of now, Josh Raga, Kevin Cruz and Justin Hurst have qualified.

On the girls' side, Abby Moilan will lift at Decatur High School on Thursday in the new unequipped weight class and have her 3rd showing at regionals.

Great year so far, and we are far from done. Regions are the stepping stone to state.
