Mr. Burson retired after a 30-year career teaching CTE classes, including 29 years at WHHS.
He began his career in FWISD as a student teacher at Eastern Hills High School. After graduating from the University of North Texas, he immediately went to work for Garland ISD, where he taught woodshop at Coyle Middle School.
At WHHS, Mr. Burson helped develop a new curriculum incorporating Computer Applications, CAD, and Technology Systems. He went on to teach a wide range of courses, including Engineering, Computer Graphics, Video Production, Architecture, and various Principles courses.
Of everything Mr. Burson taught, his favorite was helping students learn how to solve problems. It did not matter whether the problem was academic or real-life. Teaching students how to navigate challenges, gather information, and apply it to find solutions was his main goal.
His personal motto, “Failure is always an option,” taken from the show MythBusters, reflected his philosophy. He believed that through failure we learn and grow. Failing at a task does not mean failing a grade or an activity. It is okay to fail, as long as you learn from your mistakes and strive to improve.
